2 men charged in shoplifting
By ARDY FRIEDBERG
The thieves wore colorful, baggy pants, the kind with the elastic around the ankles. Perfect attire, it turns out, for shoplifting.
Before they were caught on Wednesday, the two made at least three trips into the Eckerd Drug store at 1120 Weston Road in Weston. Each time they filled their pants with items from the store's shelves - 98 items in all.
The haul was valued at $2,485, but they never got a chance to sell the cameras, fancy cologne, eye drops, pregnancy test kits and laxatives.
Alejandro Villalba, 21, of Miami, and Ramon Lavin, 36, who bas no permanent address, were arrested by Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies when the store manager realized what was happening and found a deputy in the parking lot outside his store.
Both men were charged with grand theft.
"It's unusual that someone can walk out of a drugstore with that much stuff, even making several trips," Lt. Dave Carey said. "They said they would have sold the stuff to flea markets for about $700."
